Nicki Minaj

People often ask me why I'm SO obsessed with Nicki Minaj. I usually say something like "I'm not sure, I just am", in order to avoid a long conversation about it. I kind of feel like Nicki and I have developed together.

Nicki really started her rap thing in the underground scene when I was in middle school. I like to credit seventh grade (2007) as when I started to become who I am today. Much like Nicki, this is really when the people around me saw that I was special. Nicki first appeared in the second semester of my 9th grade year, when my name was really beginning to be known around school. A year later, she releases her first album and I really begin my reign in the school. She brings female rap back, and I bring back the school mascot, along with spanish club and the first ever social inclusion club. She was compared to Lil Kim and I was compared to Tia Smart and Steven Hill (yuck). Moment 4 Life came out and I decided I wanted to make my LIFETIME, that "moment".

My Junior year she released her second album, which was more POP. I became Student Body President. This is the point in our careers where everyone either loves this change or hates it. Regardless, we are both successful. Starships came out around my birthday and it really is just a FUN song. This was really the peak of FUN I had in highschool. I was getting all of these crazy opportunities and this is also when I was the CLOSEST to all of my friends. Fast forward to October/November of Senior year, Nicki releases "The Re-up" which is the same album with 6 new songs. It was during this time when I re-upped many of my friendships. She put out a song called Freedom which pretty much spoke about her success so far and how other females rappers to come will follow her footsteps. I listened to that song everyday on my way to school for the rest of the year. It just reminded me of what I was going through with the Principal's shit and how I would always win no matter what. It was during my senior year that I was MOST popular and Nicki was on American Idol. We were both exposed to audiences that would not meet someone like us otherwise.

Fast forward to now, she has just released The Pink Print and really etched her name into hip-hop history forever. Releasing Pills and Potions back in June initially showed the world that there was a new Nicki in town. Also, Pills N Potions is about her rocky relationship with Safaree and honestly, the song til this day reminds me of my friendship with Rafael. This and the song Bed of Lies really let everyone know how deeply hurt she was about SB, just as I was about Ralph. At the same time, both songs really go to say, "Damn I love you nigga but you wouldn't be shit without me."

The album in general really says that Nicki can do pop, rap, r&b, etc, and KILL it, just as I can do whatever I want and succeed through hardwork. Moreover, this album exposed her softer side, as she was going through a tremendous breakup. At the same time, I was losing my father and people that have never seen me shed a tear were suddenly exposed to my bouts of uncontrollable sobbing.

On a more personal note, people tell me all the time that when they see Nicki on TV or elsewhere, she reminds them of me exactly. We act alike and even say much of the same things. I've had alter egos since I was in the 4th grade and she also stated that she had alter egos because it was a way of coping. Actually, Roman and Charlie are cousins. Anyway, we're also portrayed to be sexual beings but we mostly just want to be loved and cherished by one above all.

We both are deeply caring individuals who aren't afraid to show you what we're truly made of. Don't doubt us.
